Who is Myopia Management for?

Myopia Control (or Management) is recommended for any child with myopia. Treatments are most effective in young children, when myopia is expected to progress faster, but they can also be effective in slowing the progression of myopia in older children and young adults. Treatment may also be useful in children or young adults who do not yet have high myopia but meet 1-2 of the following criteria: Both parents are myopic, the kids spend limited time outdoors, and they engage in excessive near work.

The Tejadas are happy campers. Two years ago, the parents brought Eugene, age 10 , to our clinic concerned about his nearsightedness, which seemed to be getting worse. I recommended that Eugene get into the Ortho-k program to slow down the progression of his myopia caused by the lengthening of his eyeball . They got onboard. The program called for Eugene to wear special contact lenses while he slept. This effectively reshaped his cornea. Two years have passed and Eugene’s nearsightedness is now being effectively managed. He can now actively engage in sports without needing glasses.

TL;DR at the very bottom! I went here today hoping to get a medical certificate from an approved ophthalmologist for my PWD card application. Here's the full story: I wanted to apply for a PWD card because of my low vision and high lens grades (around 900). One of the requirements is a signed medical certificate from a physician confirming that I have a disability. I searched "ophthalmologists near me" on Google Maps and Abesamis Eye Care came up. When I called their number, the person who answered was really nice and accommodating! After I explained what I needed, they immediately understood and asked if I was available that same day. Since I wanted to get this done ASAP (these documents were the only things I was missing), I said yes and booked an appointment. When I arrived, I didn't have to wait at all. The receptionist handed me an identification form to fill out, and right after, Dr. Joyce Pimentel called me in for the checkup. Unfortunately, I had a common misconception that I could get a PWD card just because of my poor vision. Dr. Pimentel was really kind and patient in explaining that she couldn't approve my request because under Philippine law, I'm not qualified. The thing is, I can still see well as long as I'm wearing my eyeglasses, and approving me would put her medical license at risk. Despite this, she and her assistant still conducted thorough tests on my eyes. After examining everything, she explained that my eyes were actually in good condition relative to other people with lens grades as high as mine. This was honestly really nice and reassuring to hear! When the time came to pay, here's the best part: I didn't have to! When I called earlier, the receptionist had quoted me 2,500 pesos for the consultation and certification (not cheap!). So it was such a relief when Dr. Pimentel waived the fee completely. That said, I totally understand why their normal rate is what it is. The facility itself was really professional, and they use high-end equipment for testing. Overall, I'm very satisfied with my visit even though I didn't accomplish what I set out to do. At least now I'm properly informed about my situation and learned something new about PWD requirements and eye health. The only reason I'm writing this positive review is because I genuinely feel bad about not paying anything for the consultation. I mean, they used their equipment to test my eyes, and Dr. Pimentel and her assistant put real effort into explaining everything to me. I highly recommend this eye center! TL;DR: Came in hoping to get a PWD card medical certificate for my high lens grade (900), but learned I don't actually qualify since my vision can be corrected with glasses. Dr. Joyce Pimentel was super kind about explaining the requirements, still did a full eye exam, and didn't charge me anything. Really professional facility with great service. Highly recommend even though I didn't get what I originally came for!
